Remodeling of the Social Spaces of the Redemptorist Congregation of Porto
The Redemptorist Congregation is located in the heart of Porto, near Bolhão. In addition to the church, which dates back to the mid-20th century, the institution also had an adjoining space on the ground floor, directly connected to Rua da Firmeza. This space served as a meeting and gathering space, but no longer met the community’s needs.
We were challenged to reimagine this space to accommodate two new functions. The first was to convert the main hall into a multipurpose space open to the community with assembly areas, a private meeting room, reading and meditation areas, and prepared for multimedia projection. The second involved integrating a pastry studio space at the front of the building, adjacent to the street, operating independently but in conjunction with the other uses.
With this in mind, the bakery was conceived as an independent volume within the existing structure, distinguishing itself through its industrial materiality, while the rest of the space featured warm wood flooring and wood slats, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The meditation room on the first floor, located on a mezzanine level above the living room, was designed to be acoustically insolated from the outside. The cork flooring not only creates a sense of comfort but also contributes to sound absorption, and the modular benches allow for various configurations of the room.
The remodeling of these spaces sought to explore a renewed connection with the community, giving them a new life.
